An epic cosmic journey
As part of the Cosmos Festival, experience the timeless brilliance of Gustav Holst's monumental seven-part piece The Planets, hailed as one of the most enduring classical compositions of the 20th Century! Immerse yourself in the grandeur of this extraordinary celestial work performed by the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, as well as three other cosmic-inspired pieces including a special Knoxville commission by composer Jonathan Leshnoff, featuring the mesmerizing talent of Joyce Wang on the piano.
The Planets is Holst's most renowned creation, composed between 1914 and 1916. Contrary to popular belief, the work is not centered around the Roman Gods but rather draws inspiration from astrology, a subject that deeply fascinated Holst during that era. Each movement captures the distinct character and essence of the celestial bodies, reaching for the range of emotions and passions they evoke within us.
